No one really knows where that old adage originated, but perhaps it stated at Ducky's Sohio in Toledo with the Kwapich family. That independent service station was owned and operated by Roger's parents; Walter & Emily Kwapich. Beyond working at his family's service station, Roger's "away from the family business" began in the days of Montgomery Wards, where he became the youngest person in the company's history to run a large automotive service department with more than 25 employees! As the clock moved forward, Roger's experience has included more than 16-years with Champion Spark Plug in their Technical Service Department. In addition to heading up Technical Services for a number of years, Roger worked with shop owners, manufacturers, warehouse distributors, jobbers and technicians from all around the world. In fact, he personally trained more than 25,000 technicians on subjects including computer engine controls, advanced ignition systems, combustion theory and hands-on diagnostics. The Kwapich family’s entrepreneurial spirit rekindled in 1993 with the purchase of a medium-sized service facility in Toledo, Ohio called “Smitty’s Automotive". Roger’s experience and management skills have steadily grown the business over the years. Roger recognized early in his career that an important element to the growth of any business in the automotive aftermarket is a well-informed consumer. As a contributing editor, he has written a regular column which appeared in several Babcox trade publications. And for nearly two decades, he has been an active member in the Car Care Council. In 1989, Roger’s first national-appearance on television was on NBC’s Today Show for the Council.
